The AK47, which entered service with the former Soviet military in 1949, was conceived to rival the MKb42, Germany's pioneering assault rifle with a semi-/fully automatic switch feature at the time. Mikhail Kalashnikov, a burgeoning firearms designer, presented his prototype of the AK47 for evaluation in the quest for the Soviet Union's next-generation assault rifle.
 
This prototype, intentionally designed with fewer parts and notable tolerances, remarkably proved its reliability. It demonstrated exceptional functionality, even when subjected to harsh conditions, such as being submerged in mud or dragged by a truck. To ensure consistent and dependable firing in critical scenarios, regardless of environmental or weather conditions, operational performance was given precedence, albeit at the expense of some precision.
 
Following these successful trials, the AK47 was formally adopted by the Soviet military. Renowned for its unmatched reliability and sturdiness, it was licensed and produced in various countries worldwide. The AK47 subsequently underwent several evolutionary phases, giving rise to the AKM and AK74 models. Even with the dissolution of the former Soviet Union, it continued to progress into its contemporary form, known as the Russian AK100 series. Today, it stands as the world's most widely manufactured and used assault rifle.
